Early life and education

In a September 2024 Punch interview, Sonia Uche said she is the first of four girls. She grew up in Igbuzo, a small town in Oshimili North, Delta State, and is partly from Abia State. She attended Anioboshi Demonstration Primary School and St Augustine’s College, then stayed with her grandmother in Abia State. She studied Agricultural Economics at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture in Umudike, Abia State. Guardian Nigeria’s 2023 profile words her degree as a bachelor of agriculture and says she was born in Rivers State, spent time with her grandmother and later with her father in Ibusa before returning to Abia for secondary school and university. The two accounts agree on the main facts and differ only in how the degree is described.

She completed her National Youth Service Corps year in Abuja in 2018 and says she lost someone close to her in May 2012, a time she describes as feeling like the end of her world before she recovered.

How she started acting

Sonia Uche told Punch in February 2024 that she loved acting from childhood. She was in the dance and drama units at church and watched movies with her father, wanting to be like Genevieve Nnaji. While in her first year at university she saw a Facebook call for actresses aged 18 to 35, travelled alone to Abuja and auditioned. In the 2024 interview she names the production company as Mira Entertainment. About two weeks later she was offered a role in a movie called Complicated, in which she shared the screen with Olu Jacobs and Patience Ozokwor, playing the niece of Jacobs’s character’s wife.

Her early career was part-time. She says her mother was not involved at first and that she had to juggle acting with her studies, so she paused after a few film appearances until she finished university and served. The Guardian dates her start to 2012 and her full-time return to after the 2018 service year, marking five years of full-time work by 2023.

The role of Uche Nancy

Sonia Uche repeatedly credits her mother, Uche Nancy, as her mentor. She says that once she went full-time her mother “taught me everything I needed to know about the movie industry”. In the September 2024 interview she describes her mother’s tough feedback, saying that when she struggled to cry on cue in her first lead role her mother’s harsh words pushed her to succeed. She also mentions her mother’s older brother, Uchenna Mbunabor, as part of the family support that eased her path.

Uche Nancy is a well-known name in Nollywood production circles. The Daily Monitor reports that she is the biological mother of four daughters, including Sonia, and that she took in actress Ebube Obio as an adopted daughter. Public posts about “sisters” in this family should therefore be read with care: some relationships are by adoption rather than birth.

Breakthrough and notable films

Sonia describes Frank’s Wife as her big break. She played a naive and opinionated village girl newly arrived in the city, a character whose scenes later trended and were reused on TikTok. She says the director told her he did not want to see her, he wanted to see the character, and that living for a while with her grandmother in a village helped her interpret the role. The Guardian also names Beauty of Karma, in which she plays a stepdaughter facing hardship, and recalls a memorable on-set incident involving a fall with firewood.

She says she enjoys playing naive characters and likes not to wear heavy make-up, but also wants roles that challenge her. She names Genevieve Nnaji and Patience Ozokwor as people she admires.

Producer and businesswoman

The Guardian’s 2023 profile calls her CEO of Premium Pictures Studios and Sonia Luxury Hair Extensions, and says her aim as a producer is to make high-quality, culturally rich content that can compete globally. In 2024 she told Punch she had just begun producing for Sonia Uche TV, finding it harder than acting because it involves casting, locations and assembling the team. She said she did not have a physical shop for the hair business and that it mostly operates online.

2026: YouTube hits

Her channel has continued to grow. According to trade site Nollywood Spotlight, the romantic comedy My Crazy Wife, with Timini Egbuson, was released on Sonia Uche TV on 18 March 2026 and had about 11 million views by 15 September 2026, making it the channel’s most-viewed film out of 56 listed. The same article credits her as executive producer, producer and story creator. A second report says Man of My Dream premiered on 2 September 2026 and neared one million views within a day, with Sonia Uche starring, producing and casting. View counts change constantly and come from third-party trackers, so treat them as snapshots.

In May 2026 she publicly praised actor Anthony Woode’s performance in the film Renewed, calling him “one of the best male actors we have right now”, according to MyJoyOnline.

Personal life

Sonia has said she wants to keep her personal life private. In her 2024 Punch interview she said she has never dated an actor and described the qualities she wants in a partner, such as being God-fearing and family-oriented. She did not say she was married. We found no credible report of a husband, and earlier online claims of one are therefore not repeated here. She also says fame has not changed her much, that she still goes to markets and is happy to take photos with fans.

What we could not verify

  • Her date of birth and exact age: many biography sites list one, but none of the interviews we read gives it.
  • Her marital status beyond her own statements that she values privacy.
  • The full list of films, which runs to dozens of titles. We named only those she or reputable outlets name.
  • The size and revenue of her hair and production businesses.
  • Whether the YouTube figures are exact: they come from third-party trackers.
  • Any net worth figure: none has been published by a reliable source.
