Jamilu Isyaku Gwamna, who holds the traditional title Sardaunan Gombe, is a Nigerian economist, business executive and politician from Gombe State. He spent more than two decades in finance, heavy-equipment trading and the power sector before and during a long political career, and in 2026 he became the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for governor of Gombe in the 2027 election. Most published biographical detail about him comes from his own camp, so this profile attributes those claims and notes where outside sources disagree.

Background and education
According to a profile released by his spokesperson, Ibrahim Shawai, and published by Punch on 1 September 2026, Gwamna was born in Gombe on 5 December 1965. It says he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 1986, then a master’s degree in Business Economics and Finance with distinction from London Metropolitan University in 2004 and a PhD in Economics from the same university in 2008. The profile adds that he taught economics, international business and finance there. These credentials come from a campaign-issued summary and we did not find the university’s confirmation, so they should be read as claims by his team.
Early career
Both Punch and ThisDay describe a career that began in banking. Gwamna started as an officer at the Nigerian Bank for Commerce and Industry in 1986 (ThisDay places the posting in Abeokuta), then moved to industry at Kaduna Aluminium Limited and Kaduna Machine Works, where he rose from chief accountant to marketing manager and general manager by 1990. ThisDay says he then left to run his own firm, Amstrade Ventures Limited, which imports and sells heavy earth-moving equipment. Dates differ slightly between the two accounts; Punch lists him as chief executive of Amstrade between 1999 and 2000, while ThisDay says he left to manage it in 1990.
Public service in Gombe
He moved into politics after the return to democracy in 1999. The Blueprint newspaper says he was appointed head of the Gombe water board under the late governor Abubakar Hashidu, and Punch says he was Executive Chairman of the Gombe State Water Corporation from 2000 to 2003. Blueprint also reports that he contested the 2007 governorship election on the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) without success. ThisDay’s 2026 opinion article says he has been an active political figure in Gombe since 1999 and has contested the governorship position several times since 2003.
Business and the power sector
Punch’s profile says he was Managing Partner of Jamen Consultancy Limited from 2005 and Executive Director, later Managing Director, of Sahelian Energy and Integrated Services from 2009. It also says he took part in preparing Nigeria’s National Policy on Public-Private Partnerships in 2008. In November 2013 he became Managing Director and CEO of KEDCO, which distributes electricity in Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states, according to ThisDay.
His spokesperson’s profile makes performance claims for the KEDCO years: that aggregate technical, commercial and collection losses fell from about 55 per cent before privatisation to about 47 per cent, that monthly collections rose from about N634 million to nearly N5 billion, and that more than 1,500 young people from Gombe were employed there. These are the candidate’s own figures, repeated by his spokesperson. We found no audit or regulator report to confirm them, and readers who want to judge KEDCO’s record should look at published Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) reports.
Elections he has contested
- 2007: governorship race on the ANPP platform, unsuccessful (Blueprint).
- 2019 cycle: Sources disagree on the party. Wikipedia’s article on the 2019 Gombe election describes him as a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aspirant who came second in that party’s primary with 147 votes. His spokesperson told Punch that he was an APC aspirant ahead of 2019. We could not reconcile the two accounts.
- 2022 to 2023 cycle: The Punch profile says he contested the PDP governorship primary in 2022 and came first runner-up. Wikipedia’s article on the 2023 election says he and the primary winner were rivals and that he left the PDP in December and rejoined the APC.
- 2027: TheCable reported that the Gombe APC announced him as its consensus governorship candidate, picked ahead of former minister Isa Pantami. ThisDay says the main contenders after the primaries are Pantami (PDP), Bello Bala Tinka (ADC) and Gwamna (APC).
The 2027 Gombe race
TheCable’s report on the APC selection also listed the party’s other candidates for Gombe: Mohammed Deba for Gombe Central, Jerry Damara for Gombe South and Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for Gombe North in the Senate, plus six House of Representatives candidates. The ThisDay opinion article, which argues in Gwamna’s favour, contrasts his long record in Gombe politics with the fact that Pantami came into the contest from a national ministerial and academic background and Tinka from business and philanthropy. As the 2027 general elections approach, readers should treat that comparison as advocacy and consult the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the official list of candidates once it is published.
Traditional titles and community work
The Punch profile lists several traditional titles, including Sardaunan Gombe, Kangiwan Tangale, Walin Bojude, Dan Burum Din Waja, Marafan Tumfure and Jagaban Dadiya. It also claims that through his Sardauna Foundation and personal initiatives he distributed over 2,000 sewing machines to women between 2012 and 2018, sponsored 39 students at Yamusa Science Academy in 2017, sponsored ten students abroad in 2019 and provided 100 wheelchairs in 2026. These are claims by his spokesperson and we did not find independent confirmation of the numbers.

Much of what is published about Gwamna comes from sympathetic profiles. The Blueprint and ThisDay pieces we found are opinion or profile articles, and the Punch article reports a campaign briefing. That does not make them wrong, but it means the facts above are better described as “reported” than “audited”. Voters and researchers should compare these accounts with INEC candidate records, university confirmations and KEDCO’s regulatory filings.
