Sammy Gyamfi is a Ghanaian lawyer and politician. For several years he was best known as the National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), and since 2025 he has led the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), the state body that regulates gold trading in the country. This profile draws on Ghanaian news reports, official pages and a reference summary, and it marks which details are confirmed and which are not.

Early life and education

Wikipedia says Gyamfi was born on 28 March 1989 to Nana Kofi Genfi and hails from Wamfie in the Bono Region. He attended St. James Seminary Secondary School and went on to Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) for his first degree. The reference summary says he held leadership roles from his university days but does not list them, and we could not confirm which positions he held, so we do not repeat the specific titles that circulate online.

After KNUST he trained at the Ghana School of Law and was called to the bar on 5 October 2018. Since then he is described as a practising lawyer, although the cases he has handled are not documented in the sources we reviewed.

Rise within the NDC

Gyamfi’s political profile grew through his work as a party communicator. In 2018 he contested the NDC’s national executive elections for National Communications Officer. Wikipedia, citing GhanaWeb, reports that he beat the party’s then deputy communications director, Fred Agbenyo, by about 4,000 votes, winning 6,225 of about 9,000 votes cast against Agbenyo’s 2,225. He was re-elected for a second four-year term in 2022. In this role he became a familiar voice on Ghanaian radio and television panels and on social media, and he often presented data and documents in support of the party’s arguments.

One episode from this period shows the style that made him prominent. In July 2023 Gyamfi alleged that the then governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) had tried to bribe James Gyakye Quayson to withdraw from the Assin North by-election, and that the party had threatened to jail him if he refused. The claims were made in public statements and were politically contested; we found no court finding on them.

Leading the Ghana Gold Board

After the NDC won the December 2024 election, President John Dramani Mahama appointed Gyamfi acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company on 16 January 2025 and tasked him with setting up a new gold-trading entity, according to 3News. That body became the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod).

The board’s own site describes it as the sole authority with exclusive rights to buy, sell, weigh, grade, assay, value and export gold and other precious minerals in Ghana. In May 2025 the Ghana News Agency reported that the Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, swore in a 13-member board, with Mr Kojo Fynn as chairperson and “Mr Samuel Gyamfi” listed as acting CEO and a board member (GNA). The minister said the cedi had appreciated 16.7 per cent against the US dollar year-to-date as of 13 May 2025 and attributed part of this to inflows from gold, cocoa and remittances. That statement credits several causes, not GoldBod alone, and we do not claim the board caused the cedi’s movement. The current management page lists Gyamfi as Chief Executive Officer.

Because the job is a state appointment, its purpose and performance can be judged by public documents. The GoldBod Act, the board’s annual reports and Bank of Ghana data are the proper places to check claims about volumes bought and exported, and we have not independently verified any such figure.

The Nana Agradaa video, May 2025

In May 2025 Gyamfi was widely criticised after a video showed him handing money to the evangelist Nana Agradaa, whose public reputation is controversial. According to the Wikipedia summary, he later confirmed that he had given her $800, apologised publicly, and called it “an unfortunate act of indiscretion”. He said it was a private gesture of kindness, that she had asked for money for fuel, and that she later offered to refund it and even double the amount to protect his reputation. We report this as his account of events; we did not see an independent confirmation of the claim about the refund.

Personal life

The reference summary says only that he is married. We did not find a reliable, sourced report naming a spouse or children, and we do not repeat names found on unsourced pages.

How to read profiles of political communicators

Gyamfi’s fame comes mostly from partisan work, so accounts of him often reflect the writer’s politics. Supporters stress his research-driven briefings and his rise from party spokesperson to head of a major regulator. Critics stress the 2025 video and the argument that a party communicator is not an obvious choice to run a gold regulator. Both views exist in the public record. This article avoids both framings and sticks to dates, titles and statements that can be traced to a source.

How to check his current status

Official titles can change, and appointments in Ghana are announced through the Presidency and the relevant agency. To confirm Gyamfi’s current position, check GoldBod’s management page, the Presidency’s press releases and the NDC’s own communications. Our timeline above reflects the sources we could open in October 2026; if a later announcement exists, it should take precedence, and we will update this page once it is confirmed.
