Nnamdi Kanu was born in Umuahia, Abia State, on the 25th of September 1967. He is royalty as he is the son of Eze Israel Okwu Kanu, who is a traditional monarch. He attended primary school in Umuahia. After that, he proceeded to Government College Umuahia for his secondary education. He had his tertiary education at the University of Nigeria, but because of constant strikes, he eventually moved to the United Kingdom, where he studied political economics.

Kanu shot to fame through Radio Biafra, registered in the UK, where his messages about Biafran self-determination and his critique of the Nigerian government gained traction. He founded the Indigenous People of Biafra, whose mission is to restore the now-defunct state of Biafra by means of self-determination. Kanu’s brand of activism called for non-violent civil disobedience and strong rhetoric criticising the Nigerian government for perceived misdeeds and the marginalization of the Igbo people, thereby pushing the Biafran agenda. The IPOB has a paramilitary wing known as the Eastern Security Network, which engages in activities they claim protect the South-East from terrorist attacks.
