Jay-Z: Rapper, Roc Nation Founder and the 2027 Super Bowl Halftime Report
For close to thirty years, Jay-Z has been both one of the most successful rappers in the world and one of the music industry’s most influential businessmen. This week his name was trending across Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa, with more than 1,000 searches a day in Nigeria alone, after the media newsletter Puck reported that he is set to headline the Super Bowl halftime show in February 2027, a show his company Roc Nation has helped produce since 2019. The NFL had not confirmed the report at the time of writing.
Here is a sourced profile of his music, his businesses and the story behind this week’s headlines.

Brooklyn beginnings
Shawn Carter was born in Brooklyn and grew up in the Marcy Houses, a public housing project in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighbourhood. He attended high schools in Brooklyn and in Trenton, New Jersey. His music has drawn heavily on that background. The rags-to-riches arc, told with dense wordplay and double meanings, runs through his catalogue from the first album to the most recent.
He began recording in the late 1980s as a protégé of the New York rapper Jaz-O. Major labels were not interested at first, and that rejection shaped his next move.
Roc-A-Fella and Reasonable Doubt
In 1994 Jay-Z co-founded his own label, Roc-A-Fella Records, to release his music. His debut album, Reasonable Doubt, came out in 1996 and was followed in 1997 by In My Lifetime, Vol. 1. Both were well received by critics, and Reasonable Doubt in particular is now widely regarded as a classic of 1990s East Coast hip-hop.
His commercial breakthrough came with Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life in 1998, whose title track, built on a sample from the musical Annie, was the biggest hit of his career up to that point.
The Blueprint years and a run of number ones
Every studio album he released after his first two debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Among the best known are The Blueprint (2001), The Black Album (2003), American Gangster (2007) and 4:44 (2017). In total he has 14 number-one albums, the third-highest total in the chart’s history.
On the singles chart he topped the Billboard Hot 100 four times. Once was as lead artist, with “Empire State of Mind” featuring Alicia Keys in 2009. The other three were guest appearances: on Mariah Carey’s “Heartbreaker” (1999), Beyoncé’s “Crazy in Love” (2003) and Rihanna’s “Umbrella” (2007). In 2023 Billboard and Vibe both ranked him the greatest rapper of all time, and in 2026 The New York Times named him one of the 30 greatest living American songwriters.
Def Jam and the executive career
From 2004 to 2007 Jay-Z served as president and CEO of Def Jam Recordings, one of hip-hop’s most important labels. During his time there the label helped launch or grow the careers of Kanye West, Rihanna and Ne-Yo. He chose not to renew that contract at the end of 2007, after the release of American Gangster.
In 2008 he started Roc Nation as a venture with the concert promoter Live Nation. It has since grown into a wide entertainment business covering artist management, music publishing, a record label and, from 2013, Roc Nation Sports, a sports agency representing professional athletes. Artists linked with Roc Nation over the years include Rihanna, J. Cole and Megan Thee Stallion.
Business beyond music
His business career started early and spread widely. He co-founded the clothing company Rocawear in 1999 and opened the first 40/40 Club, a sports bar, in 2003. From 2003 to 2013 he was a part-owner of the NBA’s Nets and encouraged the team’s move from New Jersey to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where it became the Brooklyn Nets. He sold his stake in 2013 when he launched his sports agency.
In 2015 he bought the technology company Aspiro and led the expansion of its music streaming service, Tidal. When Square, now called Block, bought a majority stake in Tidal in 2021, he joined Block’s board of directors. In 2020 Roc Nation also partnered with Long Island University in Brooklyn to set up the Roc Nation School of Music, Sports and Entertainment.
Awards and recognition
Jay-Z has won 25 Grammy Awards, the eighth-highest total of any artist and the second-highest of any hip-hop artist. He has also won Emmy Awards and was nominated for a Tony. He was the first rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and in 2021 he entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Time magazine listed him among the 100 most influential people in the world in 2013.
A 30th anniversary year
2026 has been a busy year for him as a performer. To mark 30 years since Reasonable Doubt, he re-released “Dead Presidents” on streaming services and in physical formats, and added an umlaut to his stage name, styling it JAŸ-Z, as a nod to the original album artwork. In March he announced three anniversary shows at Yankee Stadium for July, celebrating both Reasonable Doubt and The Blueprint. In May he headlined the Roots Picnic festival in Philadelphia, his first headline festival set in six years, and in June Roc Nation announced a JAŸ-Z 30 concert series with dates in Paris and Los Angeles.
The Super Bowl halftime show report
Roc Nation became the NFL’s entertainment strategy partner in 2019, and since then Jay-Z’s company has been closely involved in choosing and producing the Super Bowl halftime show. This week Puck reported, citing multiple sources, that he will headline the halftime show at Super Bowl LXI himself in February 2027, with an announcement expected soon. Entertainment outlets including Just Jared and the Cincinnati Enquirer picked up the story, noting that names such as Miley Cyrus, Harry Styles and Justin Bieber had previously been suggested.
We want to be clear about the status of this story. It is a media report based on unnamed sources. Neither the NFL nor Roc Nation had confirmed it when this profile was written, and any talk of special guests is guesswork. We will update this article when there is an official announcement.
Why his career still matters
Few artists have turned one career into so many. Jay-Z built his own label when the major labels passed on him, then ran one of those major labels, then built a company that manages artists, represents athletes and helps produce one of the most-watched music performances of the year in the United States. Whether or not he performs at the Super Bowl, that legacy is already secure.
