Victor Wembanyama is a French professional basketball player who plays for the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA. Chosen first overall in the 2023 draft, he has been described by scouts and commentators as one of the most unusual prospects the league has seen, because he combines a height of more than seven feet with the ball-handling and shooting range of a guard. Early life and family

Wembanyama was born in Le Chesnay, a town west of Paris. According to Wikipedia’s account of his background, his father Félix competed in track and field, in the high jump, long jump and triple jump, and was born in Belgium to a family of Congolese origin. His mother, Élodie de Fautereau, is a French basketball coach and former player. His father is listed at 1.98 m and his mother at 1.91 m. He has an older sister, Ève, who plays professionally, and a younger brother, Oscar, who has played basketball and handball at youth level.

Before settling on basketball he played football as a goalkeeper and practised judo. His mother taught him the game while she was coaching youth teams. He began playing for Entente Le Chesnay Versailles at seven and joined the youth system of Nanterre 92 at ten. A Nanterre youth coach, Michaël Allard, noticed him in 2013 at an under-11 game because of his height, at about 1.80 m, and at first mistook him for a coach.

His African connection is real but should be described precisely. He is a French citizen born in France, and his Congolese heritage comes through his father’s side of the family. Articles that call him “Congolese” or “African-born” go beyond the record.

Professional career in France

Wembanyama made his professional debut on 29 October 2019, playing 31 seconds for Nanterre 92 in the EuroCup against Brescia. He was 15 years old. Over the next two seasons he split time between Nanterre’s senior team and its youth sides, and he was named Pro A Best Young Player in 2021. A stress fracture in his fibula in December 2020 cost him roughly two and a half months.

In June 2021 he signed a three-year deal with ASVEL, the club then led by former NBA star Tony Parker. Injuries limited his time on court, but ASVEL won the French Pro A title that season while he was sidelined with a muscle injury in the playoffs. He left the club after one season.

In July 2022 he joined Metropolitans 92 under coach Vincent Collet. In October 2022, two exhibition games against the NBA G League Ignite in Las Vegas, attended by large numbers of scouts and executives, introduced him to American audiences; he scored 37 points in the first game and 36 in the second. In the 2022–23 Pro A season he led the league in scoring, rebounds and blocks and became the youngest winner of the league’s MVP award, according to the reference record.

The NBA: rookie year and rise

The Spurs selected him first overall on 22 June 2023. He was the first French player taken with the top pick. His NBA debut came on 25 October 2023, with 15 points against Dallas. During his rookie season he set several age-related records, including becoming the youngest player to record 20 points and 20 rebounds in a game. He finished as the league leader in blocks per game at 3.6 and was unanimously named Rookie of the Year in May 2024. He also became the first rookie to make the All-Defensive First Team.

His second season brought his first All-Star selection in January 2025. It also ended early: on 20 February 2025 the Spurs shut him down for the rest of the season after deep vein thrombosis was found in his right shoulder. At the time he was averaging 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds and 3.8 blocks per game over 46 games.

The 2025–26 season was his breakthrough. He was named a Western Conference All-Star starter, and in April 2026 Reuters reported that he was unanimously voted Defensive Player of the Year, the first player to win it with every first-place vote. He led the Spurs to the NBA Finals in his first playoff run. Scouts have compared him to a range of players, which shows how hard he is to categorise. ESPN’s Mike Schmitz compared his defensive impact to Rudy Gobert and his shooting potential to Kristaps Porziņģis, while others referenced Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He has named Kevin Durant as the player he admired most growing up. On offence he can bring the ball up, shoot from three-point range and finish near the rim; on defence his length and timing make him a constant shot-blocking threat. International career

Wembanyama played for France at the 2019 FIBA U16 European Championship and the 2021 FIBA Under-19 World Cup, winning silver at both and setting a FIBA record for blocks per game in a single tournament at the Under-19 event. He joined the senior team in November 2022. At the 2024 Olympics in Paris, France reached the final against the United States and lost; Wembanyama scored a team-high 26 points in the final and was named the tournament’s Rising Star and part of the All-Star Five.

Life away from the court

Reference sources describe him as a bookish player. He completed his baccalauréat with honours, taught himself English by watching videos and television, and enjoys science fiction, Star Wars, art and literature. He is an avid chess player who has played fans in New York’s Washington Square Park and organised a chess and basketball event in his hometown in summer 2025. In June 2025 he spent about ten days studying martial arts at the Shaolin Temple in China, and said he is not personally a Buddhist.
