Obi Okoli was born in Ogboji in Anambra State, Nigeria, and he grew up with an interest and passion for the performing arts. Obi pursued formal training in this field by gaining admission to study Theatre Arts at the University of Ibadan. Obi graduated with honours, continuing with advanced studies, including professional training abroad.
After serving his fatherland through the completion of the compulsory NYSC in 1989, Obi started his career in broadcasting and production as a worker with the Nigerian Television Authority.

Obi kick-started his career as a broadcaster, producer, and director at NTA Aba from 1981 until 1999. During this time, he anchored news shows and also wrote, directed, and produced multiple TV dramas and documentaries.
Then, Obi transitioned fully into Nollywood. Since the early 1980s, he has acted in a rich catalogue of films, including Things Fall Apart (1985), The Trip, King of Kings, Venom, Not Alone, My Father’s Love, and Royal Deceit. He also founded Idejimba Films and produced works such as Like a Diamond (2019).
Obi joined the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 2011 as a lecturer in the Department of Theatre and Film Studies, where he imparts practical knowledge to the next generation of Nigeria’s creatives, drawing from his vast experience in the industry.
Obi Okoli has been happily married to Mrs. Ajie Okoli since December 5, 1987, and their union has been blessed with children and grandchildren.
