Xabi Alonso was born on the 25th of November 1981 in Tolosa in Spain’s Basque Country. He grew up in an environment surrounded by football, for his father, Periko Alonso, was a former Spanish international and professional footballer. Xabi played youth football with Antiguoko before progressing to Real Sociedad’s academy.

Alonso made his professional debut with Real Sociedad and made waves with his mature playmaking skills. He signed for Liverpool in 2004 and won the Champions League in his first season. Eventually, he joined Real Madrid in 2009 and added more LaLiga titles and another Champions League to his trophy collection. Afterwards, he moved to Bayern Munich, where he won multiple Bundesliga trophies before his retirement in 2017.
Internationally, Alonso won major honours with Spain, including the 2010 World Cup and Euros in 2008 and 2012. His influence was pivotal in Spain’s most successful era.
After retirement, Alonso began coaching. At first, he worked with Real Madrid youth teams before managing Real Sociedad B, before taking over the managerial reins at Bayer Leverkusen in Germany. In his first full season as manager, Alonso led the club in an unbeaten run to their first-ever Bundesliga title and German cup double while finishing second in the Europa League. This success got him a job as Real Madrid’s manager in 2025, but Alonso’s tenure ended early by mutual consent in 2026 after mixed results.

Alonso is happily married to his wife, Nagore Aranburu, and has three children. His family has earnestly supported his career on and off the pitch.
Alonso is one of the few coaches in the world of sport who has had a massive influence on the sport both as a player and a coach. His intelligence and tactical acumen have served him well, and for this, Alonso has the respect of everyone, players, coaches, and fans alike.
