George Akume was born on the 27th of December 1953 in Wannune, located in the Tarka Local Government Area of Benue State. George studied in local schools for his primary and secondary education before proceeding to the University of Ibadan, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology in 1978, and eventually a Master’s Degree in Industrial and Labour Relations in 1986. George also obtained a Management Certificate from the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria.
George started off his career in the Benue State Civil Service where he held several administrative positions and eventually rose to become a Permanent Secretary. His early exposure to governance laid a strong foundation for his entry into politics.

George Akume kick-started his political journey with his election as the Governor of Benue State in 1999, which he held for two terms till 2007. He moved to the National Assembly representing Benue North-West Senatorial District, a seat he held onto till 2019.
In 2019, George was appointed the Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs in the administration of President Buhari. In June of 2023, Akume was appointed as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, a prominent figure responsible for coordinating the activities of the federal government.

George Akume stands out from many others for his discipline, strong work ethic, and longevity in Nigeria’s civil service industry. His wide experience and longevity have made him a very valuable member of the All Progressives Congress.
