Maryam shot to the limelight due to a tragic incident that occurred at her home on the 18th of November 2017 at her Maitama residence in Abuja. She stabbed her husband, Bilyaminu Bello to death during a domestic dispute. Belo, her husband, was the nephew of Haliru Mohammed Bello, a former National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party.

She was arrested and charged with homicide in the FCT court. Justice Yusuf Halilu found her guilty and sentenced her to death y hanging. This ruling was later affirmed by the Court of Appeal.

Clemency, Pardon & Public Reaction

The Nigerian President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, granted her a presidential pardon after she had spent over six years in custody. This action by the president was done on compassionate grounds – including her “remorse, good conduct in prison, and the welfare of her two young children.”

This decision elicited intense publicity and mixed reactions. Some emphasized mercy while critics argued that the act could set a concerning precedent and undermine the integrity of the court.
