Early Life and Background
Segun Awolowo was born into the lineage of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, one of Nigeria’s founding fathers and a national statesman. For his primary education, he attended Mayhill Convent School. After that, he then proceeded to Igbobi College in Lagos State for his secondary education and eventually completed it at Government College Ibadan, Oyo State. Afterwards, he earned a Bachelor of Laws degree from Olabisi Onabanjo University (as it is called now) and got called to the bar in December 1989.
Career and Achievements
Segun’s career as a public servant spanned many administrations, and he fulfilled a variety of roles. Segun initially served President Olusegun Obasanjo as a Special Assistant on legal matters and traditional institutions and subsequently became the Secretary for Social Development and Transport of the FCTA under President Musa Yar’Adua’s administration.
As the head of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, to which he was appointed in November 2013, Segun championed the Zero Oil Plan, which aimed at the diversification of the Nigerian economy and to push exports in other sectors. In 2022, he was named the Secretary of Nigeria’s committee on the AfCFTA implementation for continental trade purposes.
